Transforming Derby: Railway Station to Westfield

Construction of Castleward is underway, the exciting new urban village connecting Derby’s railway station with the city centre.

The development forms part of the Derby Cityscape Masterplan and will provide 800 new homes, 34,500 sq ft of commercial space, a contemporary urban park, and a stunning new boulevard lined with shops, cafes, restaurants, and community facilities.

Construction of the exciting new boulevard is underway.

The first phase of development by Compendium Living includes 163 homes, 16,500 sq ft of commercial space, the boulevard and urban park; amounting to £100 million of investment.

The wider scheme covers an area the size of 16 football pitches and will take fifteen years to complete.

The first new businesses along the boulevard will open at the end of this year, and the first new residents will follow shortly after. (Commercial premises are currently being marketed by Lambert Smith Hampton).

Progress on the ground follows several years of planning, tendering, and compulsory purchase.

Other schemes delivered under the banner of the Derby Cityscape Masterplan include the £48 million conversion of the Roundhouse, an important railway building dating from 1839 by Robert Stephenson. The Grade II* Listed Building, described as being the NASA of its day, was derelict for many years but is now fully restored and occupied by Derby College.

The recently completed Morledge public realm scheme, which connects the refurbished Derby City Council House with the new Derby Bus Station, was a winner in the Large Project category in the Urban Transport Design Awards.
